It’s official: United Nations declares 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology follows several other recent science-based international years, including the periodic table of chemical elements in 2019 and light and light-based technologies in 2015.


The United Nations (UN) has officially declared 2025 to be the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). Agreed by its general assembly, the year-long worldwide celebration will highlight the impact and contribution of quantum science. It also aims to ensure that all nations have equal access to quantum education and opportunities. An opening ceremony is expected to take place on 14 January in Berlin.

The campaign for 2025 to celebrate quantum science has been led since 2021 by the American Physical Society and the German Physical Society (DPG). The year was chosen as it marks the centenary of Werner Heisenberg’s efforts to develop the mathematical formulation of quantum phenomena. The proposal was soon supported by other societies, including the Institute of Physics as well as the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

In May 2023 the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) endorsed a resolution encouraging an official UN quantum year. That was followed by an endorsement at the UNESCO general conference last November. In May, Ghana submitted a draft resolution for the official proclamation of the IYQ in 2025 to the UN General Assembly. It was supported by more than 70 countries and the resolution was  approved by the general assembly on 7 June.

“Through this proclamation, we will bring quantum [science] education and research to young people in Africa and developing countries around the world with the hope of inspiring the next generation of scientists,” notes Riche-Mike Wellington, chief programme specialist at the Ghana Commission for UNESCO and the Ghanaian representative for IYQ. The IYQ consortium will now organize regional, national and international outreach events and activities throughout 2025 to celebrate and develop quantum science.

“Inventions such as magnetic resonance imaging in hospitals, lasers, solar cells and the smallest chips as the basic building blocks of computers all owe their existence to quantum mechanics,” says DPG president Klaus Richter, a condensed-matter physicist from the University of Regensburg. “These and other quantum technologies give new impetus to our economic development and influence numerous areas of everyday life. Quantum mechanics is a prime example of the practical impact that an abstract physical theory can have.”

The IYQ follows several other recent science-based UN International Years, including the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019, light and light-based technologies (2015) and crystallography (2014).

Mechanical engineering and Artificial Intelligence: The power synergy

Artificial intelligence (AI) has already proven to be a game-changer in many industries, including health care, finance, and transportation. With the potential to automate routine tasks and provide real-time analysis, AI is quickly becoming an essential tool for businesses worldwide. The mechanical engineering industry is no exception.The great shift in international politics where Russia and China challenge traditional western dominance received a formal stamp from President Xi Jinping and President Putin during the former’s recent visit to Moscow. Xi’s concluding comment that ‘right now there are changes not seen for a hundred years’ and that ‘we are driving these changes’ sums up the directions of Sino-Russian partnership. The symbolism of this meeting is a combined power projection.

Emerging Trends in Mechanical Engineering – National Level Faculty Development Programme

The faculty development programme is one of the initiatives by the Young Member Panel India and first event by the Chain Events India in collaboration with Lords Institute of Engineering and Technology Student Chapter, Hyderabad.




The main objective of this event was to provide a platform and opportunity to the faculty, research scholars and industry. This programme led to exchange ideas, trends and innovations in the areas of mechanical engineering by the experts from the industry and academics.

The FDP Programme started in April 2024, with 160 external participants of different colleges, institutes and 20 participants from the host college itself. The event was held for 6 days with resource persons from the academics and the industry experts.

This event was followed by the Panel discussion on 28 April 2024, with the panel members discussing the Mechanical Engineering: Prospects, Challenges, and Career Opportunities. This Panel consisted of Dr. Syrish Raghuyal - Chairperson, IMechE India Branch, Mr. Mohammad Ameen Shaikh - Young Member Chair India, Mr. Abhishek Kumar – Event Coordinator IMechE India, Mr. Praveen Dorna – Director and Product and growth director of Verse Innovation India, Mr. A V Vishnu Reddy – Business Intelligence, Splash BI, Hyderabad, Dr. Syed Nawazish Mehdi – Sr. Prof, Dean FTD Mechanical Dept. LIET, and Mr. Samatham Madhukar – Asst Prof. and Associate Head MED, ALO IMechE LIET.

This event was successfully hosted with discussions on trends and innovations held in the brad field of Mechanical engineering, talking from the Automotive Industry, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Smart Materials, and focusing on the research as its important and a vital role in the development and innovations and lastly bridging the gap between the industry and academics which is very important for future engineers in understanding the industry and upgrading accordingly.

The Young Member Panel India with Chain India has successfully put its efforts in making its first ever such event in the South Asia Region of IMechE, focusing on the diversified learning by collaboration with different industry experts. A start in India will bring a chain affect in the region ahead.

Mechanical engineering Prof. Ryan Rosario earns $200,000 NSF award

Two-year grant will fund Rosario and two student-researchers as they study potential models for predicting, and preventing, tendon and ligament failure





Ryan Rosario, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was recently awarded his first National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for his research on the mechanics of ligament and tendon failure. In addition to providing funding for laboratory equipment and supplies, the two-year, $200,000 award also will provide support for student-researchers to work alongside Rosario on the project. This is Rosario’s first NSF award as a principal investigator.

“I feel excited, proud, and validated that a panel of experts in my field chose me and my project for this honor,” Rosario says.

Rosario’s study will look at the different components that make up ligaments and tendons—the tissues that connect bone to bone, and muscle to bone, respectively—and the potential role each component plays in the failure of these tissues. “We will be utilizing a simulation model, camera-based measurement system, and universal mechanical testing system to analyze sheep tendons and get a better understanding of how failure might initiate. This, in turn, could give us an idea of how we can potentially prevent that failure—and related injuries—from happening in humans,” Rosario says.The study also will be one of the first of its kind: “The way that I’ll be thinking about tendon and ligament mechanics, and measuring their properties, is different from what any other researcher is doing,” Rosario says. “By using a computational tool to separate out the different components, I’ll be taking the first steps I’ve seen to understand the whole tissue as two separate component parts rather than one homogenous structure.”

During the first half of this summer, Rosario will be working with two student-researchers—Jacob Hinnes ’26 and Jack Blackmar ’26—to complete the designing and building of the simulation model and measurement system, which was initiated last year with the help of Hinnes and Will Sherwood ’25. Rosario, Hinnes, and Blackmar will spend the remainder of the summer conducting test runs and collecting preliminary data.

“It’s amazing to be able to conduct lab research with a professor as a second- and third-year undergraduate student,” says Hinnes, who has a major in integrative engineering with a focus in bioengineering. “I’ve gained a lot of experience: tendon dissection, proper lab technique and maintenance, 3D modeling and printing, and team collaboration with my peers.” Rosario also will be using his NSF funding to send his student-researchers to scientific conferences to present their work. “Giving me the opportunity to put these on my resume at my age truly sets Lafayette apart from other institutions,” Hinnes says.

For Rosario, the most rewarding part of the research process, he says, is working with the students and seeing them grow as independent researchers: “I want to be able to instill that sense of excitement for discovery—the understanding that science isn’t some inaccessible thing that only certain people can do. [Participating in research] gives students confidence in their own ability, intellect, and problem-solving skills, which is an experience that can sometimes be hard to get from courses.”
