What Is Price Elasticity of Demand?





Price elasticity of demand is a crucial concept to understand in investing. It helps investors understand whether a company has pricing power or not.

Can it increase profits by raising prices, leading to increased profits? Or will the price increase lead to a drop in demand that ultimately hurts profits? A basic understanding of price elasticity will help you answer critical questions about the stock you are considering investing in.



It’s a simple equation to understand but tricky to sink in, so let’s embellish it with some examples. The price elasticity of demand is the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.

So, for instance, if Company A raises its product price by 10% and the demand falls by just 5%, its price elasticity of demand is 0.5. Alternatively, if Company B increases its product price by 10% and demand decreases by 10%, its price elasticity of demand is 1.

In this example, you could argue that Company A has more pricing power than Company B because demand for its product goes down less than for Company B. In this example, demand for Company A’s product is more inelastic than for Company B's product.

The following table shows these concepts. Working through the table, perfect price inelasticity is when demand for a product won’t change when the price moves; an example includes a life-saving pharmaceutical. If the drug will save a life, then most people will demand it regardless of a change in the price.

Perfect price elasticity is when demand moves infinitely given a price change, with an example being two producers of a commodity selling them side by side. If there are two producers of identical bananas selling them side by side in a supermarket at the same price, and one of them changes the price, then the lower-priced seller will get all the demand while the higher-priced seller will get none.

Unitary elastic demand occurs when a change in price results in a corresponding change in demand.

It’s important to note that perfect inelasticity and perfect elasticity are polar conditions used to explain a concept. In the real world, all products are somewhere between having a price elasticity of demand of zero and infinity.

Soccer Balls, Footballs & Quantum Mechanics: A New “Spin” on Ergodicity Breaking.

 






Scientists observed unique ergodicity-breaking behaviors in the C60 molecule’s rotations without breaking symmetry using advanced infrared spectroscopy. This discovery offers new insights into quantum system dynamics and promises further molecular investigations.

Researchers led by JILA and NIST Fellow Jun Ye, along with collaborators JILA and NIST Fellow David Nesbitt, scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno, and Harvard University, observed novel ergodicity-breaking in C60, a highly symmetric molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms arranged on the vertices of a “soccer ball” pattern (with 20 hexagon faces and 12 pentagon faces). Their results revealed ergodicity breaking in the rotations of C60. Remarkably, they found that this ergodicity breaking occurs without symmetry breaking and can even turn on and off as the molecule spins faster and faster. Understanding ergodicity breaking can help scientists design better-optimized materials for energy and heat transfer. The study was published on August 17 in the journal Science.


Many common everyday systems — such as heat spreading across a frying pan and smoke filling a room — exhibit “ergodicity.” In other words, matter or energy spreads evenly over time to all system parts as energy conservation allows. On the other hand, understanding how systems can violate (or “break”) ergodicity, such as magnets or superconductors, helps scientists understand and engineer other exotic states of matter.


In many cases, ergodicity breaking is tied to what physicists call “symmetry breaking.” For instance, the internal magnetic moments of atoms in a magnet all point in one direction, either “up” or “down.” Despite possessing the same energy, these two distinct configurations are separated by an energy barrier. The “symmetry breaking” refers to the system assuming a configuration with lower symmetry than the physical laws governing its behavior would allow, such as all magnetic moments pointing “down” as the default state. At the same time, since the magnet has permanently settled into just one of two equal-energy configurations, it has also broken ergodicity.

Arc System Works Announces Season 3 DLC and New Mechanics for Guilty Gear Strive.






Right before the top 6 finals for Guilty Gear Strive at Evo 2023, Arc System Works made some special announcements. The first DLC character for Season 3 of GGST will be Johnny, a highly requested character. Johnny showcased some of his new moves and mechanics during the announcement.

Johnny will be able to throw cards in the air and on the ground, which he can then slash. He also possesses sword and dashing moves. In addition to Johnny, other characters like May, Faust, Ramlethal, Anji, and two other characters will have new special moves at the start of the new season. The rest of the launch cast will receive new attacks in future updates.

Two new mechanics were revealed for Guilty Gear Strive. The first is Wild Assault, a fast dash attack that can be performed with quarter circle forward plus Dust, but it consumes 50% of the Tension Gauge. The second mechanic is the Deflect Shield, a defensive move that allows players to block any type of incoming attack, including overheads, lows, and projectiles. However, it requires 50% of the Burst Gauge and provides new punish opportunities.

Season 3 for Guilty Gear Strive will kick off on August 24, with the release of Johnny along with the new balance and system updates. The season will include a total of four characters, with the second one arriving in 2023 and the last two in 2024. Season Pass 3 offers the new fighters, two new stages, Season 3 fighter colors, and extra colors 13-15 for the entire cast.

Too many consumers are being scammed by auto mechanics, claims a new report.

 




It can be a nightmare when your car breaks down, but many consumers are left putting their trust in a mechanic they don’t know for a procedure they don’t understand and at a price that seems unfathomable.

Are you being scammed? Maybe, maybe not. Fortunately, you’re not alone. A new study by brings to light the experiences of 1,000 different consumers and the kinds of scams they’ve encountered.

"Roughly 35% of car owners have been scammed by a mechanic,” Paul Knoll, marketing director at Turn5 and AmericanTrucks.com, told ConsumerAffairs, noting that the most common scam is upselling unnecessary repairs, costing consumers an average of $975.

“But the most costly scam is when mechanics charge their customers for new parts, but they actually install used or lower-quality parts.”

Knoll says that little trick costs consumers an average of $1,295 each time it happens.

And that’s not even half of it.

Scammed men lose an average of $145 more than women.


A majority of car owners (56%) say that they were scammed due to limited knowledge of cars.


Compared to mainstream car drivers, luxury car drivers lose an average of $1,275.


Three-quarters of mechanic scams occurred at auto repair shops and 25% at car dealerships.


Approximately one in five car owners have difficulty identifying auto repair scams.


Gen Z (52%) was most likely to have fallen victim to a mechanic scam, while Gen X (44%) was least likely.
